A Mug Of Nature

For my first task in 3D Asset Design, I had to construct a mug using the 3D Modelling software Maya. Tutorials about the software was given to those who haven’t used the software before, which was very useful and easy to follow I think. I built the solid structure of the mug by merging and stretching different shapes together. After I built a normal mug structure I started to explore more tools by myself, the mug felt very plain and dull in my opinion so I decided to give myself an extra challenge: to customize the mug. I wanted to decorate the mug in a fun way and to experiment with some tones of colour. This lead me to the idea of creating a tree/log type mug, tree stumps can be highly textured and bumpy so I wanted to try and incorporate it into my model somehow. To get the feel of the stump, I added a few bumpy areas including the colour scheme, giving it more of a wooden appeal. This was starting to look great but I thought to myself it still looked slightly plain and not tree stump enough so I added a couple of features to spruce the mug up a bit. By adding leaves to the model it really made the mug stand out in my opinion, the way that there’s a strong difference in the colours sort of builds a more clear structure. The snail was the last thing I ended up modelling , I really like the attachment and atmosphere that it creates. To improve, I feel like I could of experimented with the bottom a bit more, maybe could of added more detail with roots. Also I would say it would help exploring more different tools and textures.
