Baking and Texturing a 3D Asset:

This week’s task is to bake and texture an asset in Substance Painter, I have chosen to work on one of my assets ( Work Goggles).

To start I imported my model from Maya into Substance, the file format I used for this was an fbx. Once I was into the software I began to bake my model with the correct settings without an ID map so it would be ready to have textures applied.

To experiment I started off with adding a pure gold material to the model, this gave me a base to work round because I wanted the googles to look sort of metallic in areas. Adding onto the gold was a dark brown coated metal for the body, I increased the roughness of the material slightly so it would be less reflective in the main body of the model.

Here I started adding a new layer focusing n the buttons and a part of the goggles frame, I used another pure gold texture to this but modified slightly to a more light colour to help it stand out against the brown body.

Now thinking about the appearance of the model, I wanted it to look worn and used so I added a smart metal material to it. Lowering the opacity so it doesn’t lose its colour.

A layer of carbon fibre was then added to the strap of the goggles. The darkness of the fibre actually works really well with the texture of the metal added as it gives off a worn fabric appeal.

After I was happy with the colours, I wanted to develop more depth to the model. Making it look worn by adding scratches, chemical splatters and burn marks. This part to a while to do as I didn’t want to lose the shape of the goggles to the the textures, for example the burn marks are really dark and too much of that looks overpowering.

Then I experimented with the lighting of the environment in the software, I found by reducing the light slightly it created more tones and depth to the goggles.

Finally I wanted to see what it looked like rendered. This turned out looking pretty well in my opinion, I like the darks and the mark making, it seems like there’s a story behind it.
