Book:

When texturing this asset, I decided to create 2 different variations of the book. I did this so I could have more books scattered around the shelf and work surface of my project.

The base for this asset is a brown leather material that’s been coated with a faded dark concrete texture. The concrete texture possessed the roughness needed to create the worn and used appearance of the book. On top of this, I changed the brush to a much wider light brown charcoal stroke to make dust around the edges.

To make the pages of the book look dated, I used a dark skin tone colour and kept layering upon this going lighter each time. The problem I had with this was that it was too solid on top of each other at first so I fixed this by decreasing the opacity as I layer.

For the other book, its the same method but for the stem of the book is created with a rough brass and gold texture added.

Mortar and Pestle:

A base of a light concrete material was used to texture both of these. I wanted to achieve a smooth stone texture to the assets so I did less layering of dark tones and focused more on the little details, these details consisted of scratches with particle mark making. The green particles are placed within the mortar and at the bottom of the pestle, this is so it looks like the item has been used.

When it was finished, I realised that I needed some sort of dark tone to balance the textures so on the pestle handle and at the bottom of the mortar I used a dark stone material with about 50 opacity to make them stand out more.
