Pumpkin Head DynaMesh Experiment :

For this weeks task, we had to construct and create a Pumpkin using Dynamesh on Zbrush.

To create this I started off with a poly sphere shape and began to stretch out the sphere into a more rugby ball-like form. I did this because I thought to myself not all pumpkins are symmetrical and round so I gave it a squashed structure. After I was happy with the body of the pumpkin I turned symmetry back on and began sculpting bumps around the whole poly. These bumps also had small sections subtracted to create a rough texture and an uneven model body.

Pumpkins tend to come in many various shapes and sizes which was what I was trying to achieve in my model. They can be twisted, uneven and bumpy depending on how they are grown.

Once the body shape was completed I began creating a stem or the pumpkin. This started by enlarging and layering using the standard brush tool on top of the model, making small twists and lumps at the bottom of it to make a leafy texture base. Next, I worked on the eyes, this section was difficult as I wanted to make the pumpkin have more facial expression. To make it work I subtracted and smoothed 2 curators into the front of the head, insuring I keep that uneven element in the eyes also. The mouth was created using the chisel tool along with symmetry added, even though I wanted to make things uneven I decided that the mouth could be fairly simple with a smiling expression.

Moving on to Dynamesh, I used a resolution of about 115 for this model and kept diving into adding small details afterwards. Dynamesh really seemed to make my pumpkins features pop and stand out extremely well.

Colour was then added using a harmonious blend of darker shades f orange with a soft spray of brown across areas to build definition. For the eyes I decided to make them black and white, this was amazing how it turned out as it achieved the illusion I was after. When the head rotates it gives the appeal of the eye moving creepily, which was what I was trying to achieve.
