Tufte’s theory of the narrative over space and time explains the progression between visuals to form and create something new. “The continuing interest in abstract art lies in its ability to inspire our curiosity about the reaches of our imagination and the potential for us to create something completely unique in the world” (Nimmer, 2017)
Below I have given an example of how light within a concert changes over time to form a different shape, using multiple lines of lasers. The visual starts off by creating multiple pyramids of light surrounding and stretching across the whole audience, then it makes its way back to the stages constructing a more tightly formed single pyramid, giving the spotlight back to the main performance. Elements like this are effective within the entertainment industry, it’s great to make the audience feel like they are involved in the performance.

“Our strategy for understanding these narrative graphics is to hold constant the underlying information and then to watch how various designs and designers cope with the common data”(Tufte, 1990).
These sets of imagery aligned above, screenshots from the LaserOS application, portray time within a certain space using Tufte’s theory of a narrative over space and time. By looking at this sequence I can see the common use of data displayed, going from start to finish, the 2 parallel triangular-shaped outlines slowly grow and collide together to form a star, cycling through the cool blends of colours blue to green. Using my knowledge from researching Tufte’s colour theory, these colours are also commonly found in nature which can be pleasing to the eye “visually entertaining”(Tufte, 1990) this type of feature is important in the entertainment industry when trying to gain the attention of the audience.
