For this week’s task, we had to create a prototype involving a paper element. My first instinct for an app/game using this concept was to create some sort of timed puzzle game that could involve two people to play.
There are 2 different types of games that I have taken inspiration from, Escaping the prison & Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. My idea is to create a game where the main goal is to escape the prison guided by your teammate’s instructions without getting caught by the security guards. One player has the display with the game on the screen and has to follow the other player’s orders that are on the printed blueprint, the blueprint will include all sorts of questions/riddles to give the other user clues to try and find items to escape the cell.

Stickpage.com, ESCAPING THE PRISON – Play Escaping the Prison on Poki (Accessed, 12 March 2022)
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes – Defuse a bomb with your friends. (keeptalkinggame.com) (Accessed,10 March 2022)
All of the following visuals were constructed using the software Sketchbook Pro, the art style of the illustrations used loose pen stroked moves involving elements of watercolour for small amounts of detail. ( Appearance of how the visuals have been assembled creates a similarity to the style of Roald Dahl.
Title Screen:
The title screen was generated very quickly, giving the user a glance into the prison cell that you’ll be playing in with also the main game title ‘Prisoner Penguin’ and character.
These 2 slides were created mainly as decoration with the title, the titles layered on top of the image however so I can easily switch between visuals with ease. Also to make it easier for making the game elements work smoothly, it creates fewer slides used for the penguin blinking feature.
Opening Scene & Instructions:
The opening scene involves a very basic concept of transitions with short times and loops between slides. The main title is displayed on this main screen with a play and an information button, when the play button is pressed the penguin will fall and the game shall begin.

First, before you get into the proper game an introduction will be given. This explains what the goals are of the game and what to avoid. Once happy with knowing the task, the green arrow will appear and you both can begin.

Puzzles:
Within the cell there are objects that you can interact with, none of these is highlighted to the user as to pick the right task to do you must follow the player with the papers instructions and guidance to solve not only the puzzles but the order that they have to be completed in.

An example of one of the puzzles involves the toilet, for this task the user must flush the handle a specific amount of times to retrieve an item from the bottom of the toilet. Be careful not to make too many mistakes or to hang around a task for too long as the security guard will detect these movements and catch you.

Paper BluePrint:

The Prison Guard:
To give the game more difficulty, I added the obstacle of having a prison guard randomly check the cell every now and then try and stop the user from escaping. The guard will start to appear if one of the following things happen; when the user takes too long to do a task or if a task is done incorrectly.

If the player gets caught then it is game over, red and blue lights start to flash and the cops win, giving you both the option to either try again or return to the main title screen.
