For my major project, I have decided that I’ll base my assignment on developing a few characters to help raise awareness for an environmental campaign. This campaign will be focused on the subject of Deforestation, the character will be unique and help promote the issue to encourage the audience to support the cause. These character designs will be aimed at a younger audience, mainly ages 6 and up, to hopefully educate them early on making the world a better place.

To begin, I thought I’d make up an action plan for this assignment. This will be used as a reference throughout my research to help me build my posts.

In my sketchbook, here is the action plan for this assignment stating what the projects going to be about and how to execute each post.

For the outcome of the assignment, I shall produce a variety of poster designs that include these influenced character designs with the brand and identity in the middle. The imagery on each poster will tell a story to the audience, expressing information in a visual way, stating the importance of looking after the environment and preventing Deforestation.

Inspirations –

Here are a few illustrations of posters that are aimed towards a younger audience within my subject area of Deforestation. By looking at these examples I’ll be gaining inspiration for the layouts for my own designs.

This is an illustration from the WBM Foundation website, showing a human causing Deforestation by cutting down trees and destroying habitats. This one is a great example for a younger audience it’s easy to understand with little information, which is what I want to be able to do within my own work.

This example shows one of the effects of Deforestation, leaving animals without a home to live in. I do like the simplicity of this poster with its winter aesthetic and imagery, its focus on the subject is clear and easy to understand.
This is a more complex example of a Deforestation poster that would be aimed at a slightly older audience, showing that if change doesn’t happen over time they will be nothing left of nature. I include this example because I wanted to show an approach that would be slightly too complex for the younger audience to understand so I know to stray away from it.

In the next post, I will be making a start on the research for this project, looking into the evolution of character advertising and how to make an effective character for my own work.
